Start with the complete window system

An insulated glass unit contains two panes separated by a sealed cavity. That glass unit sits inside a frame, and the frame includes seals, hardware, drainage and an opening mechanism. Each component affects the final thermal, acoustic and weather performance.

When comparing options, ask for the frame series, glass make-up, cavity width, coating, spacer type and whole-window performance information where available.

Understand U-value and solar heat gain

U-value describes how readily heat passes through the complete window. Lower values generally indicate better insulation. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) describes how much solar heat enters through the window.

The lowest SHGC is not automatically best for every opening. North-facing glass may benefit from useful winter sun when it is designed with appropriate shading, while exposed west-facing glass may need stronger solar control.

Compare the frame as carefully as the glass

Standard aluminium is strong, slim and durable, but aluminium conducts heat. A thermally broken frame separates the internal and external aluminium sections with a low-conductivity barrier. This can improve whole-window performance and reduce cold internal frame surfaces.

Think about comfort, condensation and noise

Double glazing can improve surface temperatures and comfort near the window. Condensation, however, also depends on indoor humidity, ventilation, external temperature, frame performance and installation details.

For noise, two panes of equal thickness are not always the strongest approach. Laminated glass, differing pane thicknesses and suitable seals may be more important than simply adding another pane.

A practical quote checklist

  • Frame series and whether it is thermally broken
  • Exact glass make-up and cavity width
  • Low-E or solar-control coating
  • Whole-window U-value and SHGC where available
  • Opening type, locks, seals and screens
  • Removal, installation and make-good scope
  • Warranty, lead time and exclusions

For Canberra homes, the best specification is the one that fits the orientation, room use, budget and performance goal, not the one with the longest list of buzzwords.
