PERFORMANCE WINDOWS GUIDE

Identify the noise source first

Road traffic, aircraft, barking dogs, voices and low-frequency machinery have different sound characteristics. The distance, direction, duration and time of day also influence the most useful specification.

Glass thickness and lamination matter

Thicker glass generally behaves differently from thin glass, while laminated glass includes an interlayer that can improve sound control across useful frequencies. Using panes of different thicknesses can help avoid both panes responding similarly to the same sound.

The cavity is only one part of the system

A wider cavity between panes can improve some acoustic outcomes, but cavity width alone does not determine performance. Glass make-up, frame design and sealing remain critical.

Seals and opening types can be decisive

Sound travels through gaps. Windows with strong compression seals often outperform loosely sealed openings. Fixed glazing usually offers the simplest acoustic path because it has no opening sash, although ventilation and emergency-egress needs must still be considered.

Look beyond the window

Walls, roofs, doors, vents, exhaust openings and construction gaps can become the weak point after a window upgrade. An acoustic strategy should consider the room as a complete enclosure.

What to provide for a recommendation

  • The main noise source and when it is most disruptive
  • Photos and approximate dimensions of affected openings
  • Whether windows must open for ventilation
  • Existing wall and roof construction where known
  • Any acoustic report or required rating
  • Comfort, energy and privacy priorities that must also be met
