Why condensation forms
Warm indoor air can hold moisture. When that air contacts a sufficiently cold surface, the moisture condenses into water. In winter, glass and aluminium frames are often among the coldest internal surfaces in a room.
Improve the internal surface temperature
Double glazing generally keeps the internal pane warmer than single glazing. Thermally broken frames can also reduce the cold bridge through aluminium. These measures may reduce the likelihood of condensation, but they cannot guarantee a dry surface under every humidity and temperature condition.
Control indoor moisture
- Use exhaust fans while cooking and showering
- Vent clothes dryers outside where possible
- Avoid drying large loads of washing indoors without ventilation
- Address water leaks and persistent damp areas
- Use a dehumidifier where indoor humidity remains high
Keep air moving
Open windows when conditions allow, use mechanical ventilation and avoid tightly trapping moist air behind heavy curtains. Airflow helps equalise surface temperatures and remove moisture from the room.
Check seals and installation
Cold draughts, gaps, poorly insulated reveals and water intrusion can make a condensation problem worse. A replacement project should consider the whole opening, including seals, flashings, internal linings and make-good work.
When to seek advice
Persistent water, mould, damaged timber or condensation between panes should be investigated. Moisture between the panes of an insulated glass unit usually indicates a failed seal and requires product-specific assessment.
